SET 12: IEA Hydrogen Technology Collaboration Program

Hydrogen is increasingly seen as having a major role in future energy systems. There was concern in the hydrogen community that models that are used to produce long-term scenario projections do not accurately represent the many opportunities that hydrogen offers, and use out-of-date data. Given the role of the IEA in providing impartial advice to governments around the world, there was particular enthusiasm both within the IEA and in IEA Hydrogen to ensure that the IEA has access to the most up-to-date data and models. Task 41 was created to collect, appraise and create a database of up-to-date hydrogen technology data, for use by the IEA and other stakeholders, and to examine how hydrogen is represented in energy planning models and how that might be improved in the future. In parallel, the IEA ETSAP TCP, which develops the widely-used TIMES energy system optimization model, funded a project to examine how hydrogen is represented in various national and global TIMES models, and to identify best practice modelling approaches. IEA Hydrogen and IEA ETSAP are working together in this initiative through Task 41.

Prosjektet har bidratt til økt synlighet og bevissthet rundt utfordringer knyttet til modellering av ulike hydrogenverdikjeder i energisystem-modeller. Som en del av Task 41 har en rekke internasjonale hydrogeneksperter møttes jevnlig for å adressere utfordringer knyttet til modellering av hydrogenteknologier, herunder også hvordan man skal unngå å benytte teknologidata som er utgått på dato. I tillegg til å etablere nettverket, har prosjektet bidratt til følgende: * Utvikling av en database bestående av data for ulike hydrogenteknologier. Arbeidet vil fortsette i 2022 for å videreutvikle databasen. * Det er sendt inn en journalartikkel som fokuserer på hvordan ulike kategorier av modeller behandler hydrogenteknologier. Styrker og svakheter ved ulike tilnærminger er adressert i artikkelen. * Samarbeid med IEA og ETSAP har også vært et hovedfokus i prosjektet. * Bidratt med input til to IEA-publikasjoner: o Critical Minerals Report o Global hydrogen review

The new Hydrogen TCP Task includes the following three subtasks: A. Data collection of parameters describing the Hydrogen technologies, such as investment costs, efficiencies, lifetimes, learning curves etc. B. Develop knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain and improve current methods. C. Collaboration with analysts in IEA HQ Analytics and the ETSAP community. D. Applications and interactions for providing data for IEA, ETSAP and Hydrogen TCP tasks. IFE is suggested to lead the Task by the IEA Executive Committee Members. There is a general understanding among the IEA Executive Committee that the "data and modeling function" will grow over time and eventually perhaps be institutionalized within the IEA Hydrogen Secretariat. This task and the data collection process is an important step towards the institutionalization. The participation will ensure a continued cooperation with experts which will participate in the task, and that previously participated in Hydrogen TCP Task 18 and 30. Additionally, the Task will aim to establish a collaboration between the ETSAP analysis community and the Hydrogen TCP
