Continued membership in the Swiss-Norwegian Beamlines (SNBL) at ESRF for the period 2021-2024

Alternative title: Videreføring av norsk medlemskontingent for de Sveitsisk-Norske Strålelinjene (SNBL) ved ESRF for perioden 2021-2024

Awarded: NOK 31.5 mill.

The Swiss-Norwegian Beamlines (SNBL) are a result of more than 25 years of collaboration between Swiss and Norwegian research institutions leading to construction and development of one of the most successful beamlines at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France. The scientific output of SNBL is about 120 annual scientific papers. SNBL have throughout these 25 years ensured access to state-of-the-art X-ray facilities for Norwegian researchers studying physical, chemical and electronic properties of functional materials. This project ensures continued access to SNBL for Norwegian users also for the period 2021-2024. The Norwegian contribution is a collaboration between NTNU, University of Oslo, IFE, University of Bergen and the University of Stavanger. With financial support from the Research Council of Norway, the Norwegian partners are contributing to 50% of the SNBL budget. The remaining 50% is funded by a broad consortium comprising the major research institutions in Switzerland. SNBL is a cross-disciplinary collaboration where researchers and students can use synchrotron X-rays to benefit Norwegian business and the general society by raising our knowledge about novel materials.

This proposal seeks to maintain the current support of the Swiss-Norwegian Beamlines (SNBL) from the Research Council of Norway (RCN) for the next five-year period; 2021-2024. SNBL is a single-site facility located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. Norway and Switzerland are equally contributing 50% of the total budget, which comprises operational costs and necessary upgrade of the existing infrastructure to exploit the capabilities of the new extremely brilliant source at ESRF. The proposal is a continuation of more than 25 years of collaboration between Swiss and Norwegian research institutions leading to construction and development of one of the most successful beamlines at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). A continuation of SNBL will not only ensure access to advanced research infrastructure but also give Norwegian research groups the possibility to form and develop a state-of-the-art X-ray beamline at the largest synchrotron radiation facility in Europe. SNBL is a unique gateway to direct collaboration with top international universities such as ETH (Zurich) and EPFL (Lausanne). It also acts as an excellent training facility for M.Sc. and PhD candidates at Norwegian universities, and has offered a reliable access to state-of the-art high-energy X-rays. The SNBL initiative is supported by five of the largest research institutions in Norway; NTNU, UiO, IFE, UiB and UiS, making the facility an important arena for national and cross-discipline collaboration.
