Mesocosm studies on lake zooplankton

Awarded: NOK 51,272

Lake zooplankton and abiotic factors are affected by eutrophication of increasing Arctic goose populations. So far, field surveys have yielded correlations between zooplankton and abiotic factors, like pH, conductivity and nutrient status. I propose an experiment with mesocosms to determine cause and effect in these correlations. I want to start mesocosms in aquaria with water from 3 different lakes and variable amounts of goose droppings and measure zooplankton growth, development and reproduction. The experiment will be conducted in controlled environment of temperature and light in Kongsfjorden Marine Laboratory.
