New components for use in plants for CO2 capture

Alternative title: Nye komponenter til bruk i anlegg for CO2-fangst

Awarded: NOK 4.8 mill.

CO2 capture, transport and storage (CCS) is important in the fight against climate changes. The overall aim of this project was to contribute to reduced costs and improvements for components used in solvent-based plants for CO2 capture. In CCS, more than half the cost is related to the CO2 capture. The project has performed research related components in polymer materials ("plastics") and polymer-based composite materials. Use of such materials will extend the lifetime of the solvency and contribute significantly to a lower OPEX for CC. This CLIMIT project focused mainly on components used in columns for CO2 absorption and desorption (these components are often called packing), but the materials in the project are also relevant for other components in CO2 capturing plants. In the absorber column, the packing is a passive meeting place for the flue gas with CO2 and the solvent which absorbs the CO2. The packing should have a large effective surface area (to have a high capturing efficiency), but the pressure drop through the column should be low (to have low operational costs). In today's facilities for solvent-based CO2 capture, the packing is typically made of stainless steel, but mass-produced components in polymer-based materials can result in lower investment costs for such facilities. Components in polymer-based materials can also reduce the degradation rate of the most common solvents, compared to components in metal. In addition, new solvents are being developed, which are less chemically aggressive and more environmentally friendly, and this allows for more extensive use of inexpensive components mass-produced in polymer-based materials. In addition, lower installation, shipping and maintenance costs will be achieved. In addition, products in polymeric materials have a lower CO2 footprint. The project has performed comprehensive studies of the lifetime of polymeric materials when exposed to amine based solvents at relevant temperatures (up to 125 °C). There has also been cooperation with an EU supported project aiming at implementing a "metal free" lab rig for CO2 capture. We have identified some thermoplastic materials with good chemical resistance that are not mentioned in the published literature, and we have also confirmed some materials that are mentioned in the literature. For the latter, we have compared different types, and found that the lifetime in contact with solvents is related to the molecular weight of the material. We have also tested some thermoset/composite materials, formulated in the project. For Beform AS (formerly Biobe AS), this market is a strategically important investment area. The market for such products is considered to be large and Beform aims to assume a leading role as a supplier to this industry. the products will not be limited to just packings but all types of products for CCU that can be made in polymeric materials. The project has also optimised the packing geometry (packing based on corrugated plates), in particular to reduce the pressure drop and reduce the liquid buildup at transition zones between packing components in a column. The project has also studied how surface topographies and packing material modifications can affect the contact angle between solvent and packing, and thereby also the efficiency of the CO2 capturing process. Plastic products have a great freedom of form which will be fully utilized within complex geometry.
