NANO2021-Nanoteknologi og nye materiale

Fra nanoteknologi til bedre glid

Alternative title: From Nanotechnology to better glide

Awarded: NOK 10.0 mill.

Project Number:

296540

Project Period:

2019 - 2022

Organisation:

Skiing, especially cross-country skiing, is regarded as Norway's national sport and is deeply ingrained in the country's identity. Athletes often comment on the quality of their skis after races, indicating the level of friction between skis and snow. A good glide is crucial for success and is achieved through the ski's construction, the texture of the ski sole, and the lubrication product used (glider). Some lubricants contain fluorine-based substances that can be harmful to health and the environment if inhaled or not easily decomposed. Similar substances are found in water-repellent sprays and firefighting foam. Due to the focus on fluorine in ski lubrication, new EU regulations have banned certain fluorine compounds. Replacing these products with alternative, fluorine-free solutions will be easier with the help of companies like Nano2Glide. Nano2Glide has developed new ski soles, fluorine-free lubricants, and structuring tools. The new ski sole developed by Nano2Glide is not only free of fluorine but also designed to work well with fluorine-free lubricants. The sole maintains its good sliding properties even after the lubricant has worn off, ensuring consistent performance over time. The transparent sole with a green background marks the company's commitment to being environmentally conscious. This sole is now featured in the Redline LTD series. The project has produced a new grooving tool for ski structuring, now in production and available for purchase. The tool provides greater control over the texture it creates. The project has made significant progress in finding alternatives to fluorine in ski lubrication. This includes promising results from further development of a previous NFR project's lubrication concept and exploring the potential and limitations of using silicone oils. In the snow laboratory at NTNU, the project has made significant progress in measuring ski-snow friction under controlled conditions. The snow machine creates artificial snow, allowing for friction measurements at 15 km/h with a coefficient of friction accuracy better than ±0.001 (95% confidence interval). This reduces dependence on field testing and its limited season, and the setup is now used for testing new products, contributing to ongoing innovation in the industry. The project has also created a laser alternative for structuring ski soles. Although the Nano2Glide project has ended, the development and commercialization of this technique continue.
