Shellfish are the diamonds of the sea. They are a high-quality food source and support substantial fisheries in cold-temperate and polar areas. There is a strong interest in both the North Pacific and the North Atlantic concerning shellfish resources, their population dynamics and the management of their exploitation. The themes of the conference spans biology, stock assessment, resource management and capture/processing of shellfish resources in northern waters. The aim is to bring together scientists, fishery managers and the fishing industry to discuss the status of the existing shellfish resources and their fisheries and what to expect in the future. The symposium is organized in 4 Theme sessions: 1) Shellfish in new and changing environments; 2) Assessment and population dynamics of shellfish; 3) New ways harvesting of shellfish; 4) Managing shellfish fisheries. Symposium format: The 3-day symposium will consist of plenary sessions and poster presentations. Conveners: Carsten Hvingel IMR, Norway; Gordon Kruse, UAF, USA; Bernard Sainte-Marie DFO, Canada Publication Plan: Contributions will be published in ICES Journal of Marine Science.
