New Drilling Engineering Curriculum

The purpose of the project to be established is to modernise the drilling engineering curriculum taught at universities today to meet the competency requirements of today's and future drilling engineers, to support industry certification programs and develop curriculum for continuing education and training for existing drilling engineers. The need for such development comes from accelerating changes in the drilling industry, where digitalisation, data science, robotics and process automation are having an increasing impact, thereby changing the roles and competency requirements of drilling engineers. Modernisation of the drilling engineering curriculum shall be achieved through international collaboration between universities and research institutes. A combined university effort will provide a broad basis for curriculum development, while the research institutes will help ensure relevance through a close tie to the industry, supported by the GCE NODE cluster, and further provide advanced modelling tools and operational know-how. A workplan shall developed, describing the competency requirements of the future drilling engineer and how to bridge the gap between today's drilling engineering curriculum and future requirements. Networking activities will be an important part of development and gaining approval of the workplan, including travel for face to face meetings, attendance at workshops and conferences, and dissemination for gaining academic and industrial approval.

Development of a good and detailed workplan with ownership of both intended development and funding project partners is seen as key to successful project establishment. This is the main R&D challenge associated with establishing the project. The workplan shall be used for gaining industry support and as a basis for public funding application. The workplan shall describe the competency requirements of the future drilling engineer and how to bridge the gap between today's drilling engineering curriculum and future requirements. Networking activities will be an important part of development and gaining approval of the workplan, including travel for face to face meetings and holding of workshops, and dissemination for gaining academic and industrial approval.
