Performative Theatre Criticism as a Method to Train Pupils in The Cultural Schoolbag to Articulate Experiences of Artistic Quality

The Cultural Schoolbag (TCS) provides all Norwegian children and youth with artistic and cultural experiences in school, presented by professional artists and cultural workers from the fields of literature, visual arts, film, music, cultural heritage and performing arts. It is required that the artistic and cultural encounters in TCS should be of high quality, both artistically and communicatively. But what exactly is high artistic quality? And how do the intended audience of TCS - children and youth - approach the question of quality when they experience art? Which qualities do they value in art? This research project investigates whether and how writing about and reflecting upon the art experience can be a method to strengthen the competence and confidence with which young people encounter and address art in TCS. Focusing on the performing arts (theatre and dance, in particular), courses in performative criticism will be developed and tested on youth as part of their participation in TCS activities. The goal is to develop a method for youth to get in touch with their own art experience, and to train them to articulate what they consider to be essential artistic and communicational qualities when experiencing art in TCS. Ultimately, the project aims to stimulate participation by youth in the public debate on art, by providing them with confidence, competence and a critical vocabulary with which to approach and appreciate art.

Gjennom Den kulturelle skolesekken (DKS) skal alle skoleelever i Norge få møte profesjonell kunst og kultur av alle slag, deriblant scenekunst. Intensjonen er at de unge skal bli kjent med og få forståelse for profesjonelle kunst- og kulturuttrykk. Men hva slags kunnskap erverves, og hvor og hvordan kan elevene benytte denne? Til tross for at scenekunst (dans, teater, nysirkus m.m.) utgjør en betydelig del av kunstprogrammet i DKS er det gjort lite forskning på dette kunstuttrykket, og det er gjort generelt liten forskning på hvordan elevene vurderer kunsten de møter gjennom DKS. Hva slags kvaliteter er viktige for dem? Hvor og hvordan kan elevene kritisk diskutere kunsten de ser? Og hvordan kan man produsere empiri om deres opplevelser av forestillingene de ser? Dette prosjektet vil undersøke hvilke kvaliteter og hvordan kvalitetsforståelser anvendes på scenekunst i DKS og hvordan kritikk, som tekstsjanger og kulturell praksis, kan benyttes til performativ scenekunstvurdering utført av ungdommer. Prosjektet arbeider med følgende forskningsspørsmål: Hva slags kvaliteter vektlegger ungdom ved scenekunst i DKS? Hva slags kritikkformater egner seg for elevutført scenekunstvurdering? Hvordan kan kritikk brukes til å generere empiri om ungdommers opplevelser av og kunnskap om scenekunst? I tillegg til å produsere ny kunnskap om elevenes opplevelser av scenekunsten, vil prosjektet utvikle kritikkformater og -metoder hvor ungdommer får verktøy til og trening i å diskutere scenekunst slik at ungdommenes tekster kan inngå i et offentlig ordskifte omkring scenekunst i DKS.
