Siste kapittel - en aldringsfestival

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

«Last Chapter, a Late Life Festival» was a two-day cultural event that took place in Bergen, Friday 18th June, 2021 at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, and Saturday 19th June, 2021 at the Museum of Natural History and in the Botanical garden. The purpose of the festival was to celebrate the last chapters of life and challenge stereotypical conceptions of old age and social segregation of elders. The event was an extraordinary dissemination project connected to the research project «Historicizing the Ageing Self», but also involved many other participants and partners. The mentioned research project's approach to ageing (a field which has been mostly concerned with medical and social-economic aspects of old age) is predominantly historical and literary. The «Last Chapter» project aims in similar ways to encourage public policymakers within health care, culture and innovation to think age across different disciplinary and artistic practices. The «Last Chapter» group, which is now a non-profit organization, believes that a Humanities and Arts approach to ageing can produce new meaning and insight and be a critical and creative way of reconstruing ageing as a universal human experience. «Last Chapter» started as a collaboration project in 2019 between Anna Helle-Valle (psychologist at Bergen Municipality's nursing home services), Mary Miller (director of Bergen National Opera), Margery Vibe Skagen (head of the SAMKUL-project «Historicizing the Ageing Self», Faculty of Humanities, UiB) and Jill Halstead (head of «Social Acoustics» at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, UiB). Their plan for a « Late Life Festival» in June 2020, was expanded in the course of the first year of the pandemic with new partners (Bergen Women's Association; Edvard Grieg choir; Oseana Live) and new sponsors (The Kavli funds, Vestland County Municipality, The Arts Council, Bergen Women's association). The non-profit organization «Siste kapittel» was established to manage the expanded collaboration and funding. The Norwegian Research Council's support was at this point separated from the additional funding and administrated separately by UiB. When the festival had to be postponed because of the pandemic, a digital arena was created as an alternative platform with the same title (sistekapittel.no). Since then, concerts have been streamed via BergenPhiLive og OseanaLive to Norwegian health institutions; podcasts and other forms of popular, academic and artistic activity related to the topic of ageing have been disseminated. The digital arena has also hosted interviews and short lectures by members of the «Historicizing the Ageing Self» project. The social entrepreneurs «Fremtenkt» («Thinking forward») invited researchers and other people interested in ageing to join digital «Futures workshops» where challenges and solutions for more age-friendly societies were discussed. 19th June, 2021, it was possible, in accordance with the then strict measures for contagion control, to arrange a physical festival at the Museum of Natural History and in the Botanical Garden in Bergen. The festival was free and open to the public. It offered a large and varied cultural programme including lectures, dialogues, poetry, song, music, dance, visual arts, an exhibition and guided tours of the garden. Besides popular artists and performers as well as well-known contributors to the public debate on ageing, the festival programme also included contributions from researchers in the fields of medicine, literature, art history, music therapy and botany. An interdisciplinary and inter-artistic festival seminar was carried out on 18th June. This international research event had to be almost completely digital because of international travel restrictions. It included 40 contributions, which were mostly prerecorded, while introductions, discussions and two streamed performances were held in real time.
