WP1: Project management JRC and VUA assisted Chiron in WP1. The communication between the partners were by e-mailcorrespondance and by TEAMS meetings. The partners communicated well and a lot contact during this periosd as the products from Chiron was a part of the certification at JRC: No formal project meetings, but a formal closing seminar is planned i November/December. WP2: Exploitation and Dissemination. Three product flyers were produced covering 13C CPs, native individual congeners and single chain mixtures. A postcard with QR code compiling the available resources was produced for distribution at conferences and in shipments. A discount voucher for 10% off the first order of CPs was created as a purchase initiative. A new conference banner was created for the Dioxin launch event . Email footers, website banners, programme advertisement and social posts were created for Dioxin. Chloffin branded pens were commissioned for promotional purposes. 4 point massagers in the form of the Chloffin branding were ordered as promotional gifts with the slogan ‘let Chloffin take the stress out of CP analysis’. A new animation was produced based on this slogan using cartoon ampoule characters. The Chloffin website was updated with the Chiron’s complete CP range using 3 generations to differentiate. A presentation was delivered at BFR 2022; New generation of reference standards for chlorinated paraffins. WP3: Specifications and Market requirements The work on markets requirements is continued through customer inquiries and by talking to potential users. In particular this information has been relevant in designing standards for an interlaboratory study (ILS) carried out by JRC and for the design of new 13C-labelled internal standards. WP4: Synthesis of reference materials Altogether since the last report (No 5) the following synthesis are accomplished: 4 new CP congeners; 8 13C-labelled CPs; 13 single chain mixtures. A patent on 13C-labelled CPs is being followed up and is pending. Two common calibrants are made and certified, one for single congeners and one for single chain mixtures. WP5: Analytical methods Work progress and report are at the free University of Amsterdam and JRC WP6: Cerification of reference materials The certification of the common calibrants for the certification of the fish CRM was completed. Further the certification of single components is ongoing and is planned for December 2022.

CPs have high emerging emerging environmental concern due it is heavy and high volume production, it's long-range transport and persistence as environmental contaminants and the posibility of bio accumulation and toxicity. SCCPs were classified as POPs under the UN Stockholm Convention in 2017, and have been placed on several monitoring lists, such as the 2000/60/EC Water Framework Directive. CPs monitoring and analysis is quite chllenging, the main reasron is that no suitable and generally acceped reference standards are commercially available. CHLOFFIN project aimed to develop CP standards with defined composition and response factors, which are similar to the industrial mixtures. With the completion of CHLOFFIN project, Chiron has successfully developed and produced dufferent types of CP reference materials and CRMs, these standards will enable accurate quantification of CPs as well as helping in distingushing the various CP congener groups. The standards developed are well accepted by end-user such as Institutions, laboratories, for carry on both CPs research and routine analysis.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are complex mixtures of thousands of isomers, produced in high volumes, and are used as plasticizers, flame retardants and metal working fluids. Production takes place at all continents and estimates of total global production are far over 2 million tons/yr, led by China (1.3 MT/year) and India (0.6 MT/yr, growing at 14-18%/yr). For a persistent compound, these are extreme volumes, e.g. total of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) ever made worldwide is ca. 1.3 million ton. CPs (short- and medium- chain) are classified as persistent and their physical properties imply a high potential for bioaccumulation, with potential carcinogenic to humans according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). SCCPs are under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), they have been prohibited in the EU since 2012 (Regulation (EC)850/2004) – but, due to their persistence, CPs will be in the environment for decades. The acceptance of SCCPs as POP was the longest process of all POPs due to lack of reliable analytical methods – a key driver for the CHLOFFIN project. Our goal is to develop a production platform for CPs certified reference materials, mainly targeting short- and medium- chain CPs, comprising: 1. New reference materials incl. pure native single standards, 13C labelled CPs as internal standards and matrix material certified; 2. New production process for synthesis to achieve high yields and purity, incl. synthesis of native and 13C-labelled SCCPs and MCCPs; 3. New analysis methods for native and stable isotope CPs; 4. New and robust analysis methods (process and protocol) for SCCPs and MCCPs. CRMs and matrix material will be analysed, certified and will be tested for purity and relevance as standards. The main results will be the tested and certified reference materials, synthesis processes and matrix material CRMs, which will be applied and tested in environmental and food safety analysis.
