NGINO - Next Generation Internet in Norway

Alternative title: NGINO - Next Generation Internet in Norway

Awarded: NOK 0.89 mill.

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative, launched by the European Commission in the autumn of 2016, aims to shape the future internet as an interoperable platform ecosystem that embodies the values that Europe holds dear: openness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy, cooperation, and protection of data. The overall mission of the Next Generation Internet initiative is to re-imagine and re-engineer the Internet for the third millennium and beyond. Despite the NGI initiative has been launched a while ago, the Norwegian actors do not have an active participation in it, what results in several negative effects on i) being less aware about the NGI developments ii) being less present in forming the strategic NGI vision, activities and associated funding schemes for Horizon Europe, iii) fully utilizing the large funding opportunities opened for the third parties, namely top-level researchers, start-ups and SMEs in Norway and finally iv) need of efforts in mapping and unifying numerous stakeholders ranging from academic institutes to businesses and presenting their opinions as a common voice. In order to address the mentioned challenges, dedicated and more focused efforts are required from the Norwegian entities to engage and explore the opportunities presented by the NGI initiative on the national and European levels eventually making a strategic influence on the overall NGI development. Therefore, the NGINO project has been designed to coordinate the Norwegian initiatives towards Europe, support the development of a Norwegian strategic research and innovation agenda and explore and disseminate information about the European funding opportunities in the scope of the NGI initiative. NGINO is based on a strong consortium which is composed from leading entities - NTNU, UiO, Telenor, SINTEF and NRK. The consortium partners represent a diversity of disciplines and industries that the NGI initiative is calling for.

A lack of active participation in the NGI initiative by Norwegian actors has negative effects on i) being less aware about the NGI developments ii) being less present in forming the strategic NGI vision, activities and associated funding schemes for Horizon Europe and finally iii) fully utilizing the funding opportunities opened for the third parties that have been defined by the H2020 ICT Work Programme, namely top-level researchers, start-ups and SMEs. Moreover, there is a lack of one focal point at a national level that would unify numerous stakeholders ranging from academic institutes to businesses and present their opinions as a common voice. In order to address the mentioned challenges, dedicated and more focused efforts are required from the Norwegian entities to engage and explore the opportunities presented by the NGI initiative on the national and European levels and eventually to make a strategic influence on the overall NGI development. Therefore, the NGINO project has been designed to coordinate the Norwegian initiatives towards Europe, support the development of a Norwegian strategic research and innovation agenda and explore the European funding opportunities in the scope of the NGI.
