Rett pollinering for auka fruktsetjing , større avling og betre fruktkvalitet i eple

Alternative title: Pollination of apple trees for improved yield and fruit quality

Awarded: NOK 6.0 mill.

The overall goal of the project is to improve the management techniques for obtain large annual yields of high quality apples and the economic results for the fruit grower. The total amount of Norwegian produced apples is declining. It has varied from 12000 tons in 2002 to 5300 tons in 2015. The total acreage has decreased in the same period. However more acreage is planted, and the locations are the counties Vestland, Viken og Vestfold og Telemark .The phenology of flowering of commercial apple cultivars at different apple growing regions will be monitored for finding good pollinizers. The work started the spring 2020 and continued in 2021. To improve fruit set, cross pollination of different commercial cultivars with pollen from a compatible pollinizer cultivar is a first requirement. Genotyping and genetic investigations will be carried out on apple seeds trying to identify the name of pollinizers (paternity testing). This work started during the 2020 season and continued in 2021. Controlled pollination experiments will be done to test the efficacy of pollination with pollen from different potential cross pollinizing cultivars and pollen tube growth will be examined. Nectar collection for the sugar and phenolic components analyses will be gathered from different cultivar. Pollen was collected at the balloon stage from all the apple cultivars in May 2020 and 2021 for germination and morphology analysis and will continue the coming years. Production systems were monitored at growers level and economical figures will be calculated. NIBIO Ullensvang together with expertise from universities abroad in cooperation with all the fruit packing cooperatives in Norway, the Norwegian Fruit Advising Team and Norwegian apple growers are conducting these experiments. The results will be implemented to the fruit industry and elsewhere.
