Alternative title: BioDry - Technology for effective reduction of bacterial growth and biofilm formation on equipment in the food industry.

Awarded: NOK 12.0 mill.

The aim of the project is to develop, test and demonstrate new technical solutions for robotic drying of process equipment in the salmon and meat industry. These industries may have challenges with the formation of biofilm and the growth of bacteria, especially the pathogenic bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, on equipment that is difficult to dry. Step 1 was to establish requirements specification for the mobile drying system using QFD analysis based on experiences from the user industry, industry partners and research partners. Through electronic surveys of the user industry, it has been decided that 3 specific process machines will be in focus. The drying rig's requirements specification was established, and a mobile drying unit was built. After testing, the rig was rebuilt and improved. The work of analyzing and determining important mechanisms for inactivation and killing of bacteria on production equipment has been initiated, and physical parameters for the pilot scale unit determined. The first systems for measuring thermal and biological conditions on process equipment with difficult access for washing are under order, and analyzes have been carried out from Q4 2020. Testing of the killing of listiera bacteria on steel and plastic heated with hot water has been carried out. Based on the selected process equipment, one or more partially closed and open risk areas will also be selected in the machines to be heat-treated and dried. As of today, tests have been carried out on general assumed problem areas to assess the correct temperature and air volumes to prevent droplet spreading. In parallel, the development of AR technology (augmented reality) begins, which will ensure correct disassembly of process equipment for the best possible washing and drying. Further in the project, optimization of the drying technical solutions and implementation of this on a robotic arm will be carried out. The work with AR has focused on finding suitable technologies for hardware and software. The first prototype is an app for android phone, developed with the software Unity. The app has been tested to be able to visualize 3D models over the video feed of the mobile phone using visual tags, and enable the user to interact with the 3D model by scrolling through animations that can show the process of disassembly. The plan further is to create a simple 3D model for a relevant machine that makes it possible to test accuracy
