Dyrking av søtkirsebær i potter - Ny dyrkingsmetode for tunnelproduksjon

Alternative title: Performance of sweet cherry trees growing in pots in high plastic tunnels.

Awarded: NOK 6.1 mill.

The aim of this project is to develop new knowledge how to grow sweet cherry trees in pots in high tunnels and produce high fruit quality in an environmental friendly way. High density orchards with rain covers are the most common system for preventing fruit cracking in Norway using multibay high tunnel systems and retractable rain covers. The total sweet cherry production in Norway has declined the last 20 years. One more advanced way of producing sweet cherries is to grow the trees in small pots in greenhouses or high tunnels. Preliminary results showed that the yield potential is much higher than in the open fields and producing larger fruits. Challenges are to optimize the water and nutrition supply and adjust the temperatures to obtain large yields of high quality fruits during different periods of the season. The international literature about fertilization in soil and substrate of cherry trees is now under reviewing and a publication will be compiled. Field trials started in the spring 2020 and continued in 2021 at Nibio Særheim and Ullensvang in high tunnels growing sweet cherry trees in pots with substrates where all elements are provided through fertigation regimes to individual trees. Three different fertilization regimes are testing: All the essential minerals are provided through the drip water system, as slow releasing minerals grains in pots and as leaf applications. In addition experiments with different cultivars and two training systems, spindle trees and UFO(Upright Fruiting Offshoots) are tested. The field trials will last during a period of four years. Monitoring of production system at growers level have started and economical figures will be calculated. The results are implemented regular to the fruit industry and elsewhere.
