Nor-SA2023: Joint evaluation and mitigation of emerging contaminatn risks

Alternative title: NOR-SA2023: Felles evaluering og skadebegrensning av risiko ved forurensning

Awarded: NOK 4.5 mill.

The growing concerns associated with the accumulation of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment is a global concern. The Nor-SA2023 project, which is an addition to the SANOCEAN research project Marine Sewage Outfalls - Environmental Impact Evaluation, has strong emphasis on education and sharing of knowledge for the benefit of young researchers in both Norway and South Africa. This will first and foremost take place through the annual summer school that will collect both national and international experts in the field of emerging contaminants. Through lectures, group work and discussions amongst participants students will have a unique opportunity to learn from some of the greatest experts in the field. This will be further facilitated through the mobility scheme that gives students and young academics the possibility to have longer research stays in laboratories of these experts. The sharing of knowledge will also be promoted through guest lectureships. This will give the chance for South African researchers to give lectures at Norwegian universities and for Norwegians to give lectures in South Africa. Naturally, such visits will also facilitate scientific discussions that will be of great value for all project members. In addition a range of outreach activities in the project are aimed at the general public to secure the spread of knowledge related to the risks associated with emerging contaminates.

The students attending the summer school will actively participate in these activities and will gain valuable experience in communicating with the lay public, which is of increasing importance.
