Alternative title: Monitoring and detection of holes in nets for fish farming.

Awarded: NOK 6.0 mill.

Project Number:

309526

Project Period:

2020 - 2022

Organisation:

Escape of fish from sea-based fish farms is and has been a major problem for the industry for many years. Escapes lead to economic loss, genetic influence on wild fish, risk for spreading of disease as well as a public image problem for the industry. The main cause of escape is related to holes in the fish pen nets. Hole in net may be due to a number of causes; bad weather, net cleaning, boat propellers may rupture the net, etc. Lately, several instances have been reported where tuna have penetrated the net. Today, the detection of net holes is done by visual inspection by ROVs or divers - a time consuming and weather dependent exercise with long response times and increased risk for holes being undetected for a long time. The project idea is to develop cost-effective and sensitive sensor technology for continuous condition monitoring of fish pen nets. Firstly, to develop a method for the detection of loads that may cause damage to the net and thereby initiate inspection so that holes do not remain open and be subject to fish escape. Secondly, to be able to detect existing holes based on analysis of the dynamic response of the net. Methods for detecting incidents that could potentially lead to holes are based on detecting when the load on a net section is high. Such incidents can be jerks in the net or gnawing between a chain and the net. The results show that strain sensors mounted in the net or attached to the net are capable of detecting forces far lower than the breaking strength of the netline. It is therefore concluded that it will be possible to establish sensors that can monitor a net and raise an alarm when forces arise that could threaten the integrity of the net and cause holes and thereby fish escape. Methods for detecting existing holes in nets are based on detecting changes in frequency response for net sections with holes compared to sections without holes. Two different excitations have been tested; excitation from the environment, i.e. waves, wind and current, and excitation by means of an actuator, i.e. a controlled, forced excitation. Extensive analyses of time series and frequency response for both types of excitations indicate that the response measured by a strain sensor mounted in a given net section does not change significantly when there are holes in the section compared to when there are no holes in the section. The machine learning algorithm for detecting holes in net sections achieved results of up to 90% (which was the target for holes down to 10 x 10 cm) for most of the cases analyzed, but the results from one of the two field stations may indicate that the machine learning algorithms have challenges in detecting the condition (holes or not holes) of net sections where the condition of the net section has changed from the training period to the test period. This is a natural consequence of the fact that there is no significant change in the sensor response to holes in the net. Accordingly, it is concluded that the planned methodology is unlikely to work for the detection of existing holes in a net.

Nevnte kvalifikasjonsprosjekt dokumenterer at metoden fungerer i laboratorieskala.
