The hybrid Li-ion capacitor (LIC) proposed by Beyonder and IFE represents a combination of two proven, matured technologies -supercapacitors and Li-ion batteries. By using internal components and materials from each and by adding advanced pre-lithiation step, the hybrid LIC provides a unique synergy of power and energy density that is normally not achievable from conventional energy storage technologies. This hybrid solution will deliver longer cycling life and higher power density than that of batteries, and higher energy density than supercapacitors possess, thus bridging the gap between two existing technologies and opening new markets and applications to electrification.

Evaluation of current state-of-the-art and feasibility study of hybrid Lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) field demonstrated the advancements of technological solution proposed in the project. Production of LIC cells at the industrial scale enables the emergence of new and existing applications, which require balance of high power and energy - a field, where neither Li-ion batteries nor supercapacitors can cover. Such applications include peak shaving in wind turbines or photovoltaics farms, where intermittent power supply has to be smoothed to suit the needs of power grid. In addition, it also enables the development of new approaches such as hybrid energy storage, where LICs are combined with batteries or fuel cells. Such hybrid solutions are an ideal match for charging stations and heavy transport sector, e.g. mining trucks. Proposed solution has a substantially better environmental impact and supports the following UN goals: Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Cities and Communities.
