Datadrevet Anleggsplass

Alternative title: Data Driven Site

Awarded: NOK 9.4 mill.

Using big data to cut emissions Skanska wants to make the construction business data driven by developing AI for heavy machinery. The goal is less emissions, shorter construction times and reduced costs. The construction industry has a huge potential to reduce CO2 emissions. It’s responsible for 15% of Norway’s CO2 emissions and needs to drastically reduce this in the coming years. Skanska wants to play a leading part in achieving this. The industry is looking at new solutions to build in a more sustainable way. One important part of this work is optimization and improving efficiency of heavy machinery used on civil construction projects. Around 20% of the industry’s emissions stem from these types of machines. The potential for significant emission cuts and millions in reduced running costs is huge. Skanska is running a research project with SINTEF, Volvo and Ditio which investigates how AI and data can be used to cut emissions, costs and save time. Together they are using machine learning and route optimization to increase efficiency. The digital tool under development will be launched commercially helping the whole industry to reach their sustainability targets. Scientists from SINTEF Digital use data already logged by Skanska to develop a tool for automatic real-time management of machines on their projects. The research project “Digital Anleggsplass” has a 18,5 MNOK budget with half as a grant through the Pilot-E program. Norway spent 100 BNOK on road construction projects in 2019. Picture a road project where every single machine knows where all the others are, what tasks they are performing and what the most efficient way of organizing the work is at any given time. Algorithms that recognize inefficient routes, identify which machines are needed where and coordinate the machine park could make this a reality. No more unnecessary waiting, idle engine running or superfluous work, while also making civil construction projects more sustainable.
