NorwAI - Norwegian Research Center for AI Innovation

Alternative title: NorwAI - Norsk forskningssenter for AI-innovasjon

Awarded: NOK 96.0 mill.

The Norwegian Research Center for AI Innovation (NorwAI) is an internationally leading center for research-based innovation on data-driven artificial intelligence. Its mission is to develop theories, methods, and technologies for successful and responsible exploitation of data-driven artificial intelligence, leading to industrial innovations. The center includes Norway’s strongest research communities on artificial intelligence and data science, and some of the most ambitious industrial locomotives. In addition to advancing the state-of-the-art in AI research, the center puts special focus on trustworthiness and sustainability. This means that all technology development at the center includes results from multi-disciplinary research activities on societal impact and ethics, privacy and security, and technology transparency. To achieve this, NorwAI has an initial domain focus in the industry areas of extended Industry 4.0, telecommunication, finance and media, all of which are chosen based on technology maturity, resources and ambitions, and societal impacts. The center enables innovation not only from improving existing operations or transforming individual businesses, but also from efficient transfer of knowledge and experiences between industries in AI innovation ecosystems. NorwAI is hosted by the Department of Computer Science (IDI) at NTNU. In addition to NTNU, the center consortium consists of the University of Oslo, the University of Stavanger, the research institutes Norsk Regnesentral and SINTEF, and 11 leading industry companies. NorwAI works closely together with the industry-sponsored Norwegian Open AI Lab at NTNU, and it is collaborating with some of the strongest AI research groups and networks at universities in Europe, Canada, US and China. Throughout the past years, NorwAI has already experienced significant progress in core research areas. Ongoing projects and research tasks include: - Conceptual innovation in the social studies of AI, drawing on empirical case studies. - Development of a framework for assurance of trustworthy AI-enabled systems. - Creating datasets to build large language models (LLMs) for the Norwegian language. - NorGPT has been launched during Arendalsuka and tested among NorwAI partners - Anomaly detection and predictions for low quality streaming data, relevant for, e.g., sensor and mobility data. - Research and protype development on hybrid AI: use cases include virtual flow metering for the oil industry, predictive maintenance for wind turbines and temperature modelling in transformers. Throughout the year, partner workshops addressing common research questions and innovation opportunities have been organized. Those workshops gathered partners across work packages with common interests to discuss challenges, develop use cases, or hands-on tutorials. For the NorwAI research and innovation center, dissemination and increasing understanding for AI innovation is a core task. Researchers engage in the public discussions on the challenges and recent advantages in AI. In addition to participating in organizing academic conferences, we organize the annual NorwAI Innovate conference in Trondheim, where participants can get updated on AI innovation research and use-cases from the industry, presented by internationally renowned keynote speakers. The conference has been a great success, with close to 200 participants in 2023.
