FLEXSI - Flexible Design and Production of Specialized Ferro-Silicon Materials

Alternative title: Fleksibel design og produksjon av spesialitet ferrosilisium legeringer

Awarded: NOK 10.3 mill.

Project Number:

309990

Project Period:

2020 - 2024

Subject Fields:

FlexSi project will develop innovative magnesium treatments by optimizing the material microstructure leading to increased productivity in the foundries. The advantages of the new products will be demonstrated at industrial scale from batch material production. The project will combine lab-scale experiments, advanced characterization, numerical modelling and plant trials. The equipment allowing for casting of ferroalloys with different thicknesses was tested and further developed and improved. Ferroalloys with different chemical composition and cast with different thicknesses and cooling rates were characterised to complete the mapping of microstructure variations. The microstructure development was modelled numerically for synthetic alloys containing a limited set of elements. Work on developing a method to quickly assess the FSM efficiency was further improved based on plant trials

Elkem’s state-of-the-art products and technical support ensure that foundries worldwide can achieve prime quality and consistency in their steel production and iron castings. New challenges related to circular economy and sustainable production are emerging and Elkem aims at developing new additives to solve them. Some of these additives are Si-based ferroalloys specifically designed for casting high performance component in ductile cast iron. This project aims at developing innovative magnesium and inoculant treatments by optimizing the material microstructure leading to increase productivity in the foundries. Mandal Castings AS will demonstrate at industrial scale the advantages of the new products. A new flexible production method will be developed in parallel to reach the fine control required to optimize the microstructure. To achieve that goal the project, in addition to experts from Elkem and Mandal Castings, research scientists from the Catapult Centre Future Materials AS and SINTEF will contribute by providing access to top level experimental facilities, advanced characterization and numerical modelling.
