PlastiSirk - Quality control and documentation of recycled thermoplastics

Awarded: NOK 4.0 mill.

With this project, NOPREC has achieved improved quality assurance and several types of product documentation for recycled thermoplastics in collaboration with Containerservice Ottersøy and Norner Research. The project has developed new knowledge and method sets to document the recycled plastic's quality, quality improvements, and as a result expanded the application area for recycled thermoplastic to manufacturing companies. The documentation methods developed in the project have contributed to the recycled plastics being accepted and certified as base material for products according to product requirements like industry-specific product certifications. Example industries are packaging and aquaculture constructions. The companies have established their own quality assurance laboratory at the recycling plant, with new recommendations for on-site testing of material and processing properties. In addition, quality screening routines that include new pollution barriers and improved screening methodology for the identification and classification of plastic waste types have contributed to more stable product quality for the recycled plastics. More stable product quality, and documented variance, in the various plastics contributes to the fact that it will be easier for manufacturers of plastic products to know what they can expect from a recycled raw material. These results are important for increased use of recycled plastic materials in line with international and national objectives regarding reduced consumption of natural resources, circular economy and sustainability. Through various product cases, the recycled plastics have been tested for residual additive levels in recycled plastics without additives, and several trials have been made with quality-enhancing additives to prevent degradation and change the plastic's material and processing properties. Several of the trials were successful, and have been used further in other R&D projects for scaling up production with the addition of additives. In addition, experiments have been carried out with a mixture of different types of plastic waste in order to arrive at combined recycled plastic materials that meet the requirements specification for new plastic products without adding other additives. The results were good for several of the mixing ratios, and follow-up projects to scale up the use of such materials have been initiated for use in building materials products.
