ERA-NET GAS: Decision support system for sustainable and GHG optimized milk production in key European areas

Alternative title: Beslutningssystem for bærekraftig melkeproduksjon med lave utslipp av klimagasser i viktige europeiske regioner

Awarded: NOK 3.9 mill.

MilKey has been led by the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy in Germany and involves partners in Norway, Ireland, France, Greece, Belgium and Poland. In response to global challenges of increased greenhouse gas emissions, the MilKey project aimed to develop a decision-support tool for sustainable milk production in Europe with particular emphasis on reducing greenhouse gases. The three elements of sustainability (economic, environmental and social conditions) have served as an important common thread in the project. The project was divided into 6 work packages (WP’s) MilKey started by analyzing the driving forces for sustainable milk production in Europe and has identified the key challenges. Models have been run based on existing data and an overview of sustainability indicators and the protocol for recording these have been produced and delivered in work package 1 (WP 1). In work package 2, sensors for gas and climate monitoring were to be developed in barns. Some of these sensors were to be systematized and form an online monitoring tool for greenhouse gas measurements called OTICE. Prototypes of the system have been developed and tested in experimental barns both in Belgium and in Germany. Due to the corona pandemic, the delivery of important components for major production of these sensors was stopped. This meant that further testing in several barns in the participating countries has not been possible until now. We hope that data will be retrieved also from the Norwegian OTICE barn during the first period of 2023 (WP 2). There are large variations in greenhouse gas emissions from dairy cows, and emissions vary depending on feed intake, feed type, feed quality and feed utilisation in the cow. The project has therefore contributed to the purchase of a Greenfeed greenhouse gas meter that can be placed inside barns, but also outside on pasture. Greenfeed measures greenhouse gases from cattle directly from the exhaled air when the animal eats from the machine's feed trough. The Norwegian researchers joined forces with researchers in GENO and NMBU to obtain a broader data set from several such Greenfeed machines. These results have been presented at two international climate conferences in 2022. Participating countries recruited several representative focus farms that contributed with their environmental and economic data from daily operations. A great deal of work was put into the development of protocols and templates for obtaining this data. A total of five computer templates have been produced with accompanying manual. In Norway, five farm visits and several interviews with farmers have been conducted. The other participating countries conducted similar surveys in their selected focus farms. This formed the basis for the work in workpackages 3 and 4. The data is weighted and entered into a DEXI tool in a tree-like structure for lifecycle analyses (WP3 and WP4). The farms that had provided complete basic data were taken further into the development of the decision support platform. There has been a lot of work across work packages and across national borders with many workshops conducted both digitally and by physical meetings. The corona pandemic meant that we had to use digital solutions in a new way, which we have mastered well. Work package 5 has drawn up a detailed plan for communication and publication, while work package 6 has been responsible for coordinating the entire project. A separate public website has been prepared for the project (www.milkey-project.eu) where a lot of information has already been published. In addition, each participating country has created its own website in its language (e.g. https://www.nibio.no/prosjekter/milkey). The project has used social media such as Twitter and LinkedIn in its communication of results. In addition, the project has been presented at several conferences in different countries, in addition to more local events such as the North Norwegian Agricultural Fair Horva in 2022 and the NIBIO conference (e.g. from Norway). The decision support platform MilKey will eventually be able to function as a tool that can be used in several European countries and will provide a broader understanding of the prerequisites, opportunities and challenges for achieving lower greenhouse gas emissions from milk production. In particular, the tool will help decision-makers (e.g. farmers, advisers, politicians) to make knowledge-based choices and provide information to consumers on key indicators of sustainable milk production in Europe. Through the new DairyMix project, this work will be continued. Through the DairyMix project, the project group and the same participating countries will ensure the tool's further development into the finished product and also have a plan for its lifetime after the end of the project period.
