Forskerpool - 2020 - Oivi

Awarded: NOK 87,299

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique which allows for capture of 3D volume images of the retina, being used by opthalmologists (eye-doctors) to diagnose and monitor multiple retinal eye diseases, such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma and Age-related Macular Degeneration. The technique is growing in popularity among eye-doctors, but wide-spread use is prohibited by cost ($100.000 and upwards), bulkiness and challenging use. In the project a technical feasibility study will be performed to understand the basic hw-architecture, processing requirements, and the balance between specifications for an OCT-scanner and mass production cost. Also generation of understanding of requirements for manufacturing would be included, and whether Minalab at Sintef might be a suitable manufacturer facility in the short and long term. Oivi is developing devices for screening patients in primary care, starting with an automated camera for diabetic retinopathy. An automatic low cost OCT device with embedded diagnostics would fit very well into Oivi´s long-term roadmap, and a positive outcome of a 50 hour “forskerpool project” could be extended into a potential future BiA-project, or similar.
