The 25th IAHR Symposium on Ice

Awarded: NOK 53,636

The IAHR Ice Symposium was arranged for the first time in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1970. Since then the conference has been arranged as a biannual event with a few exceptions. The conference is formally arranged by the IAHR ice committee and usually held in one of the countries represented in the committee. In the year 2020, Norway is hosting the 25th conference in Trondheim, 26 years after the last time this conference was arranged in Norway. The aim of the conference is bringing together international experts in the field of science and engineering related to river and lake ice, sea ice and terrestrial ice which allows exchange of ideas across different fields. The conference is organised into 15 subtopics, covering a wide range of issues related to science and engineering related to ice: 01 Ice mechanics 02 Sea ice remote sensing and forecasting 03 Fixed offshore structures in ice 04 Ships in ice (moving vessels in ice) 05 Floaters in ice (moored or dynamically positioned vessels in ice) 06 Waves in ice 07 Oil and pollution in ice 08 Harbours and coastal challenges 09 Engineering problems with icing (marine and atmospheric) 10 Icebergs 11 River and Lake ice processes 12 Ice action on dams and bridges 13 Environmental aspect river and lake ice 14 Ice and hydropower 15 Ice actions on river and lake morphology Within all of these fields we will cover applied and basic science and practical applications and engineering issues. The target group of the conference is scientists and engineers working with ice, and we do expect participants from universities, research institutes, consultants and public sector and private companies. We do also aim at attracting students on the master and phd level to the conference and support this through reduced fees and a student paper award. The conference will be organised as a series of presentation sessions and an excursion to the Orkla river to illustrate practical issues with ice related to hydropower operation.
