Support for anniversary symposium - Ocean, weather and climate, science to the service of society.

Awarded: NOK 51,137

The project entails the planning and execution of a 3-day symposium focusing on ocean science and climate in Southern Africa and the surrounding oceans, the symposium will take place on 10-12 March 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa. The symposium is arranged partly overlapping with the 23rd Session of the GCOS-GOOS-WCRP Ocean Observations Physics and Climate Panel which ensures the presence of international expert and reduces travel and climate footprint of scientist traveling to both. The invited speakers are leaders in the fields of ocean and climate science, including climate prediction and operational oceanography as well as experts on this geographical region. Invited speakers also include the scientist that have been involved in building the Nansen Tutu Centre over the past 10 years. The program emphasizes the link to societal challenges related to marine management and climate change. Part of the program will be based on submitted abstracts. Since capacity building is a central part of the Nansen Tutu Center, we will ensure that there are student speakers as well as gender balance among the speakers. The first day consist primarily of invited keynote presentations and will end with an ice breaker and a poster session. The following two days will highlight the achievements of the past 10 years by the Nansen Tutu Centre as well as current research on the region. This part of the seminar is divided in 5 consecutive thematic sessions and will be selected through an open call for abstracts. The thematic session consists of the following: - Session 1: Ocean, weather and climate, science to the service of society - Session 2: Regional oceanography: Angola Benguela Agulhas Current systems - Session 3: Marine ecosystem and carbon cycle: change, variability and management - Session 4: Climate variability and change, meteorology and ocean atmosphere interaction. - Session 5: Southern Ocean
