In this project we aim to provide new knowledge of protein products derived from Calanus finmarchicus, including how dietary inclusion of these products affect animals and how the specific components of the products can affect various functions in the animals. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production industry in the world, and will contribute with an increasing share of the nutritional requirements for the world's population. With an increase in the production volume of fish and shrimp comes a need for new and sustainable feed ingredients that provides growth and good health for the animals. Fish meal has previously been the dominant protein source in aquaculture feed, but the shortage of this resource in recent years has led to plant-based protein being the main protein source in feed. The use of plant proteins in the diet for aquatic animals will not provide all the essential nutrients they need, it is thus necessary to develop new marine proteins for the aquaculture industry. Calanus AS harvests the zooplankton C. finmarchicus, the largest renewable resource of the Norwegian Sea, which with an annual production of approx. 300 million tonnes has a larger biomass than all other fish species in the same area. The company has developed a sustainable harvesting practice in collaboration with fisheries, research institutes and authorities, and the products from this huge resource are thus sustainable and a "local" alternative for Norwegian aquaculture. We will explore the functional properties of the protein products through feeding trials with inclusion of Calanus Hydrolysate and Calanus Powder in the diet of the model organisms sea bass and white Pacific shrimp, and measure growth, survival and various health parameters. The bioactive properties of the hydrolysate will be studied with bioassays and cell studies to identify bioactive peptides related to: i) increased muscle growth in salmon and bovine, and ii) glucose metabolism and hypertension in humans. Results from feeding trials show that inclusion of hydrolysate from calanus leads to increased growth, feed conversion and better health in European sea bass. A manuscript is now in the works, in which results from feeding trials will be joined with results from cell studies showing how peptides in the hydrolysate can promote skeletal muscle growth. An additional feeding trials with white pacific shrimp is completed, and we are waiting on results from SPAROS in Portugal.

Forskningsdelen i PhD-programmet er inndelt i to hovedområder.
