Fluid adjustments

Alternative title: Fluid adjustments

Awarded: NOK 8.0 mill.

The idea is to combine advanced sensors to measure or derive fluid properties and process such data by a self-calibrating algorithm that predicts fluid properties. The algorithm will calculate amount of an additive or a treatment is required to reach target fluid properties and feed that as a set-point to a control system for fluid treatment. The result is an automatic fluid treatment system that keeps fluid properties near target accurately and reliably. The concept will increase control of and reduce unintended variations of fluid properties, and by that facilitate more accurate and consistent drilling of critical sections with earlier safe detection of upcoming unwanted events. Furthermore, when the concept has proven sufficiently stable and reliable, it will reduce need for human drilling fluid operators offshore and facilitate a higher degree of remote monitoring, control from onshore centers and in the future, this will be the basis of autonomous adjustment of the primary well barrier. This will contribute significantly to reduced cost and environmental load from drilling operations. This innovation project will reach a high level of accuracy and reliability at laboratory conditions, and by that reach autonomous execution of a predefined series of experiments. The solution will be created and integrated into a control system ecosphere identical to an offshore environment, lowering the threshold to implement this in drilling operations.
