Network-building Activities, The CORE Group

The research group «Citizens, Opinion, Representation, and Elections» (CORE) at the Department of Comparative Politics, University of Bergen, received the highest score and was evaluated as Excellent in the Evaluation of the Social Sciences (SAMEVAL) in 2018. This project will contribute to further scientific strengthening and renewal in the group through several competence- and network-building activities. First of all, the CORE group will organize national PhD courses in statistical methods and data analysis, including courses on design and analysis of survey experiments and on analysis of panel data. This will contribute to strengthen the research training possibilities for PhD candidates nationally. In addition, members of the staff will be offered intensive courses in advanced statistical methods, focused on the latest and most relevant techniques and approaches within political science. Furthermore, the research group will establish a “scholars-in-residence” scheme to invite prominent scholars to spend short stays at the Department as guest researchers. The invited researchers will participate in the research group's activities, meet and discuss research issues with colleagues at the department, and be advisors and mentors for the PhD candidates. Finally, the Comparative Politics Lecture Series would provide the opportunity to invite leading international scholars within the group’s research fields to present their work. In addition, The Stein Rokkan Memorial Lecture Symposium, organized in connection with the well-established annual Rokkan lecture, will invite external scholars together with staff members to discuss topics related to the lecture. All the prospected activities are expected to further strengthen an internationally competitive research group that operates at the forefront of public opinion research. The project will be of crucial importance to increase the international visibility of the research group and to strengthen external networks.

Forskningsgruppen "Citizens, Opinion, Representation, and Elections" (CORE) ved Institutt for Sammenlignende Politikk, Universitetet i Bergen, ble vurdert som Excellent og fikk høyeste skåre i Evalueringen av Samfunnsvitenskapene (SAMEVAL) i 2018. I dette prosjektet vil forskningsgruppen, gjennom en rekke kompetanse- og nettverksbyggende aktiviteter, bidra til vitenskapelig utvikling og fornyelse både i forskningsgruppen og ved instituttet. Gruppen har en grunnleggende basis i anvendelsen av robuste data og analysemetoder i sin forskning, og vil gjennom PhD kurs, samt kortere avanserte metodekurs rettet mot stab, ytterligere styrke den metodologiske kompetansen i gruppen og ved instituttet. Det planlegges å arrangere nasjonale PhD-kurs om analyse av paneldata, samt kortere avanserte metodekurs i, for eksempel, kvantitativ analyse av tekstdata, Bayesiansk statistikk, maskinlæring og Data Science. Forskningsgruppen vil videre styrke sitt internasjonale nettverk gjennom et eget gjesteforskerprogram (Scholars-in-Residence), en forelesningsserie med inviterte forelesere fra topp-universiteter i USA og Europa og et eget symposium knyttet til den årlige Rokkanforelesningen. Gjennom disse aktivitetene vil gruppen legge til rette for utvikling av internasjonale nettverk og forskningssamarbeid med fremstående forskere internasjonalt. Prosjektet forventes å bidra til ytterligere synliggjøring av forskningsgruppen eksternt, så vel som styrking av samholdet i gruppen internt.
