Awarded: NOK 59,999

Although developments in remote communication are impressive, achieving adequate functional or social remote presence is still not possible, causing the need for burdensome travel and transport. Additionally, the current health crisis has transformed the world because measures such as social distancing also carry in them the risk of social isolation and the inability to apply one's skill at remote sites. ARISE tackles these challenges by revolutionising the way we can experience social connectedness, and apply one’s skills and knowledge, without being constrained by distance. To achieve this, ARISE will create the next generation multisensory telepresence systems that can effectively transport an operator’s social and functional self to a telepresence robot. ARISE has five objectives through several breakthrough modules: By creating social presence (1), we achieve bidirectional social interaction at a distance. To allow effective operation in different types of environments, we develop fit-for-purpose telepresence systems. Through intuitive universal control (2) an untrained operator is able to control any of these telepresence systems over any distance. Additionally, we develop immersive sensory reality (3) that closes off the operator from his/her physical location while providing multisensory stimuli representing the remote environment. . Within ARISE, intuitive and modular design is the cornerstone of development. In combination with striving for integrated solutions and taking into account acceptance and social embedding we aim for wide and sustainable deployment in a variety of markets, initially focussed on use-cases from healthcare and inspection and maintenance.
