Maritime 5G

Alternative title: Maritime 5G

Awarded: NOK 9.0 mill.

With the introduction of 5G, mobile communication networks will for the first time address use cases beyond mobile voice and broadband for the consumer and business market. Examples of target applications include industrial control systems, remote medical surgery, smart grid, and transportation. The promising target requirements and key performance indicators for 5G systems have triggered interest from the industry, and several large international automation companies have recently revealed that they are developing 5G-based solutions for integration with their industrial control systems. On this background, the primary objective of the project is to identify and develop business cases and technical specifications for maritime 5G-based solutions, and implement pilot applications to be demonstrated in realistic environments. The first phase of the project has been committed to analysis of 5G technology and operator models, and its applicability and potential business models within the maritime domain. The project also has an ongoing dialog with regulatory authorities (Nkom) regarding future regulations of frequencies for maritime 5G.

The promising target requirements and key performance indicators for 5G systems have triggered interest from the industry, and several large international automation companies have recently revealed that they are developing 5G-based solutions for integration with their industrial control systems. 5G pilots and projects are also in development in other areas like airports, harbors, and autonomous vehicles. It is expected that similar initiatives will soon be announced within the maritime industries. On this background, the overarching vision of this project is to maintain and strengthen the position of Kongsberg Maritime (KM) as a world leading supplier of solutions for maritime automation, control, navigation, and autonomy through an early adoption of 5G technology. This ambition will be achieved through the primary objective of the project, which is to identify and develop business cases and technical specifications for maritime 5G-based solutions, and implement pilot applications to be demonstrated in realistic environments. Kongsberg Maritime will be supported by three research organizations, with SINTEF Digital and the University of Oslo providing competence on technical analysis and performance evaluation of 5G technologies and solutions, while SINTEF Ocean will assist in the development of user needs and requirements for maritime 5G applications.
