"Propulsion for the Green Future"

Alternative title: Propeller for en Grønnere Framtid

Awarded: NOK 16.0 mill.

The project "Propulsion for the Green Future" aims to introduce propulsion systems with reduced emissions and lower production costs for smaller work boats, passenger ships and fishing vessels. In collaboration with customers, research institutions and suppliers, we are now developing new design and production methods to create more efficient and "green" propulsion systems. All work packages have been initiated and linked to product development in KM to ensure a good implementation. There is good progress in most work packages. One work package has been put on hold pending technology solutions from other work packages.

The “Propulsion for the Green Future” project will develop propulsion equipment for new vessel types with reduced emission and lower production costs. The project will focus on propulsion equipment to smaller work boats, passenger vessels and fishing vessels. In addition to changed design for smaller vessels, we will introduce new material technologies to improve sustainability, reduce weight and cost and increased efficiency. Following thrusters, propulsion components and technology will be focused on in this project - Thruster design: Next generation Thrusters with focus on weight reduction, cost reduction, standardization and modularization - Composite propellers; Develop and produce propeller design in composite for open propellers for smaller vessels to reduce weight, increase efficiency and reduce cost - Use of polymer materials in propulsion components: to encapsulate electric motor components in smaller thrusters for the marked segments with smaller vessels - AM Propulsion components: Use of additive manufacturing in propulsion components to make smart design to reduce weight, cost and lead time on spare parts. - Design and manufacture Permanent Magnet Motor for smaller thrusters to reduce costs, weight and to introduce new design especially with focus on the efficiency, size and noise of the thruster.
