In the CATALYSE project we will develop new and more powerful disruptive catalysts to assist for the cost-efficient conversion of non-food/feed biomass feedstock into advanced (2nd and 3rd generation) biofuels for road freight, air transport, shipping, and other uses, through catalytic thermo-chemical and physico-chemical processes. The successful execution of CATALYSE will contribute to putting the European and Japanese transport sector in the global limelight, by benefitting of high innovative performance catalytic conversion technologies. Fully exploiting the potential of certain types of non-conventional/low-value biomass/waste feedstocks, results in an increase in the availability of energy crops coming from marginal lands that do not compete directly with food crops. The GHG emissions associated with fossil-fuel based transportation will be avoided by replacing these with more advanced, sustainable and carbon-neutral biofuels alternatives , greatly reducing the environmental impact. Through the knowledge exchange of State-of-the-Art (SoA) and beyond SoA experimental catalysts, reactors and processes, CATALYSE will develop disruptive high-performance novel catalysts for the pathway composed of 3 pillars: (1) non-food/feed waste and bio-residues to syngas, (2) syngas to DME, and (3) DME to biofuel. Several complementing types of innovative reactors will also be investigated within the project to achieve an ideal process. The resulting advanced biofuels will be qualitatively characterized through motor tests.
