Energy storage plays a key role towards a carbon-neutral economy in Europe by providing flexibility to the increasing share of intermittent energy sources. Li-ion batteries is the most popular electro-chemical storage technology, and the number of battery projects are rising. Recently, the European Commission published a study on energy storage and highlighted concerns related to recycling and effective lifetimes of Li-ion batteries. One way to address these two concerns, is to consider reuse of EV batteries in new applications, so called second life. The role of second life batteries is getting increased attention, both from research and industry. The 2ND LIFE project aims to answer some of the arising questions to the topic of second life batteries. The overall objective of the project is to identify and quantify obstacles and opportunities for the Norwegian 2nd life battery market?s ability to contribute towards a carbon-neutral economy. In the project we will provide an outlook for the existing end-of 1st life batteries in Norway, study properties and potential of aged Li-ion batteries and strive to understand the safety of the reused batteries. We will also develop models to predict the performance, design and optimize user cases for 2nd life batteries and quantify the overall impact through LCA analyses. The 2ND LIFE project have now started on a report describing accesible batteries for reuse. In addition we have also started several life cycle tests for older batteries with an adapted use pattern. Preliminary results show that it is possible to extend the life of a used battery cell by adjusting parameters such as temperature, state of charge and charge current. These results will be complemented with safety analysis, to further evaluate the safety of a second life battery.

The project aims to identify and quantify obstacles and opportunities for the Norwegian 2nd life battery market’s ability to contribute towards a carbon-neutral economy. We will contribute to expand the state of the art due to its inclusion of the most important and relevant aspects influencing the 2nd life marked for batteries. This includes providing: - a thorough assessment of future developments within the Norwegian market for used batteries - understanding and expanding the current knowledge regarding degradation and safety of used batteries by performing experiments on actual used batteries - technoeconomic assessment of relevant use cases - life cycle environmental impacts of second life battery systems With the extensive experience from previous projects on battery degradation and safety, the 2ND LIFE project aims to provide the novelty of performing in-situ experiments on used Li-ion battery cells. The project will develop methodology to diagnose the state-of-health and state-of-safety of used batteries through in-situ measurement techniques that leaves the battery cell intact.
