Geothermal is an underutilised resource which is expected to grow considerably in the coming decades to help achieve climate targets, including the European Green Deal. Currently, geothermal requires fairly high investment and operation costs. Some of the costs are being addressed through a series of geothermal H2020 projects (Geo-Coat, GeoSmart, Geo-Drill, GeoPro, and GeoHex). FlowPhys is part of the consortiums in all these projects, and for each project we are developing novel geothermal software tools which we can use to optimise designs and operation of geothermal energy. The objective of this project is to combine these software into a unified software tool with high focus for the geothermal energy area. This new software tool will lead to more efficient designs and operation of the geothermal power plants as well as drilling activities, thereby providing significant reductions of CAPEX, OPEX, and reduced environmental footprint.
