BaSS aims to facilitate that battery energy storage systems (BESS) become an alternative to grid reinforcement for voltage challenges, when this is the most socio-economically rational solution. Several different services for voltage support may be relevant in the same power grid (value stacking). It is challenging to design control systems and methods for optimal rating of such a BESS. Knowledge, methods and design criteria will be achieved through four main professional workpagages (WP). WP1 is about the BESS as a grid service: when can a BESS contribute with voltage support and in which cases will the BESS have limited value? This will involve defining which power quality problems a BESS can solve, and to consider how a BESS can solve several different problems simultaneously. Surveys and meetings have been conducted with partners for mapping and ranking of network services from the battery system. Improved voltage quality, power relief and increased short-circuit power seem to be most in demand from the grid companies participating in the project. For grid customers, other services such as reserve supply, stabilization of microgrids, optimization of cost for energy may be relevant. An overview has been made of which services have good potential to be combined with others. Here it has been assumed that the battery system is specified for the primary service. An estimated assessment of how suitable such a battery system is also for other additional services is included. WP2 is about operation strategies and communication needs for operating a BESS. In order for a BESS to be able to contribute with voltage support, operation strategies must be futher developed and considered to be able to solve the problems defined in WP1. Here, we will simulate different strategies and the behavior of the BESS. The developing of control strategies has begun with prioritization of services based on results from Activity 1. WP3 is to test the BESS as voltage support. In a Smartgrid-lab, we will test and verify different operation strategies - both strategies that solve a single problem, and stategies that combine different uses of the BESS. In the field, we will demonstrate voltage support in a real low voltage network, and compare the results with those from lab testing. This will be an important part of assessing how suitable a BESS is as voltage support for different cases. A technical specification for a battery system to a pilot installation in the field is under development. The setup of the Smartgrid Lab is finished. WP4 is to develop a methodology for assessment and specification of BESS for voltage support. The grid companies need such a methodology to be able to evaluate the BESS against traditional grid reinforcement. In which cases should a BESS be used instead of upgrading lines, and how should network planners arrive at this?

Samfunnet blir mer elektrifisert og mengden distribuert energiproduksjon øker, noe som bidrar til at det oppstår flere utfordringer knyttet til spenningskvalitet i distribusjonsnettet. Dette kan være effekttopper, lav kortslutningsytelse, langsomme og hurtige spenningsvariasjoner, overharmoniske spenninger eller spenningsusymmetri. Spenningsstøtte er definert som tiltak som søker å løse disse utfordringene. I dag løser ofte nettselskapene behovet for spenningsstøtte ved tradisjonell nettinvestering (nye kabler, linjer og transformatorer), men dette er ikke nødvendigvis den mest samfunnsøkonomisk rasjonelle måten å møte disse utfordringene på. Det har blitt demonstrert at batterisystem kan være et godt alternativ til nettforsterkning, bl.a. gjennom IPN-prosjektet IntegER, der batterisystem ble brukt til å løse utfordringer med effekttopper, usymmetri og hurtige spenningsvariasjoner. Et batterisystem er en mer fleksibel løsning enn tradisjonell nettforsterkning, ettersom det kan flyttes og gjenbrukes. Batterisystem kan dermed også brukes til å utsette nettinvesteringer, f.eks. i områder der det er usikkert hva det fremtidige lastbehovet vil bli. Videre er batterisystem et godt alternativ når det trengs en rask løsning, siden nettoppgraderinger kan ta lang tid å planlegge og utføre. Batterikostnadene har også falt drastisk de siste årene. Alt dette tilsier at å investere i batterisystem i enkelte tilfeller vil være mer samfunnsøkonomisk rasjonelt enn å oppgradere strømnettet. Det er et behov for en metodikk som kan hjelpe nettselskapene med å vurdere og spesifisere batterisystem opp mot nettforsterkning. Videre er det behov for mer kunnskap om forbedrede styrestrategier, riktig dimensjonering og valg av batteritype for å realisere det fulle potensialet til batterisystem som spenningsstøtte. BaSS skal legge til rette for at batterisystem blir et alternativ til nettforsterkning ved spenningsutfordringer der dette er den mest samfunnsøkonomisk rasjonelle løsningen.
