GaiaVesterålen – Vi bygger lokalsamfunnets økosystem

GaiaVesterålen - We build community ecosystems GaiaVesterålen (GV) is an environmental and history project where innovation, research, and technological development are at the forefront. In a new museum in Sortland built by discarded containers and other recycled materials - the project in now developing advanced technology to model how environmental impact is a result from our individual- as well as collective actions over time. The data will be projected on a 3D model of Vesterålen. The container museum will be part of an experience-based export product aimed at an international audience. Central to the project is the preparation of an environmental contract for the community. The environmental contract development started in autumn 2021. This work package is managed by Nordland Research institute. The environmental contract is developed in a co-production by the local community. The environmental contract will form the basis for the technological content of the final prototype that will be created in the project, and will be shown in European cultural capital Bodø2024. Gaia has this autumn gathered 30 representatives of Vesterålens municipalities. This group represents a wide range of the local community with backgrounds in everything from fishing to space travel, and an age range from kindergarden to retired. The problem they are set to solve is; can the region agree on defining climate and environmental goals in a self/personal-environmental contract for Vesterålen? At the same time the first conceptual 3D modell prototype has been successfully developed and tested. GaiaVesterålen is a unique innovation project. The project aims to create a symbiosis of history, technology and knowledge that will be a part of the solution to today?s environmental and sustainability challenges. Interactions between private households, organizational life, the public sector, and the business community are necessary to find solutions. This will be done through technology development and innovation. The research questions are: 1) How can co-production of knowledge engage and involve both local communities and visitors to increase the level of environmental involvement and to develop cultural experiences offered by museums?; 2) How to effectively develop engaging experiences using 3D presentations; and 3) How to efficiently link data from different sources to generate knowledge about the past, the present and the future? The project will have local, national and international effects by increasing employment, turnover, exports, attractiveness, and environmental focus. The project owner is Lofotr Næringsdrift, a department in Sortland Museum. The business partners are Deadline Media and Vesterålen IKT. The research partners are Nordland Research Institute and SINTEF Digital. An important milestone for the project is to demonstrate Gaia Vesterålen at Bodø 2024; Bodø European Capital of Culture 2024.

Museer skal ikke bare bevare fortiden - de er også en aktør i nåtiden med potensial til å bidra til samfunnsendring. Prosjektet Gaia Vesterålen (GV) har som formål å bidra til en bærekraftig utvikling av lokalsamfunn ved å kombinere eksisterende og nytt innhold i museer ved hjelp av banebrytende teknologiske løsninger. I internasjonale avtaler og rammeverk som FNs Parisavtale om utslipp av klimagasser, FNs Agenda 2030 for bærekraftig utvikling , EUs Green Deal og ikke minst FNs bærekraftsmål vektlegges betydningen av lokal forankring og initiativ . Med FNs bærekraftsmål nr 11,12,13,14,15 og 17 som utgangspunkt for utviklingen og implementeringen av en miljøkontrakt for lokale aktører, ønsker vi med dette prosjektet å a) øke forståelsen, interessen og engasjementet for miljøspørsmål og b) øke interessen for museene. GV vil bli utviklet ved Lofotr Næringsdrift AS avdeling Sortland Museum (SM), hvor man den senere tid aktivt har testet ulike produktsegmenter for utviklingsøyemed. Med enkle grep og fokus på bærekraftig utvikling, fikk SM økt besøkstallene med over 300%. Forskning viser også at miljøbevissthet og grønne produkter er viktig for stadig nye grupper, turister inkludert GV blir et opplevelsesbasert produkt som vil ha hjemmehavn i Vesterålen, samt flere omreisende kopier. I dette vil man ta i bruk en fysisk 3D modell av Vesterålen hvor informasjon vil bli projisert (projection mapping) i kombinasjon med AR og VR opplevelser, samt en historiesamlende enhet. Modellen blir som utstillingsopplevelse en game changer i museumssammenheng. Prosjekteier er Lofotr Næringsdrift, avdeling Sortland Museum. Bedriftspartnere er Deadline Media og Vesterålen IKT.
