På klimatokt i Sørishavet - SØRIS

The Southern Ocean regulates the global climate by controlling heat and carbon exchanges between the atmosphere and the ocean. Rates of climate change on decadal time scales ultimately depend on oceanic processes taking place in the Southern Ocean, yet too little is known about the underlying processes. Limitations come both from the lack of observations in this extreme environment and its inherent sensitivity to intermittent small-scale processes that are not captured in current Earth system models. SØRIS focus on the premise that research is being done to tell the truth early enough so we can still mitigate climate change. However, the Southern Ocean is an abstract place for most people, the remote and harsh environment making it inaccessible for most of us. SØRIS focus on this and use novel and effective measures to overcome this communication challenge. SØRIS has publish cartoon series, video, photos and given several interviews to Norwegian newspapers, radio and TV.

SØRIS stories and actions will focus on giving hope. SØRIS will focus on the premise that research is being done to tell the truth early enough so we can still mitigate climate change. However, the Southern Ocean is an abstract place for most people, the remote and harsh environment making it inaccessible for most of us. SØRIS will focus on this and use novel and effective measures to overcome this communication challenge. SØRIS activities are made possible due to the unique platform that is available by Østerhus participation in SO-CHIC Research cruise onboard the German Research Vessel “Polarstern” where Østerhus will live and work in February and March 2021. The audience is given the opportunity to enter the ship and to follow the researchers hunt for the Antarctic climate treasures.
