Enabling hydrogen in Norwegian gas export

Awarded: NOK 0.30 mill.

Today Norway is one of the largest sources of gas for the European energy system, providing between 20 and 25 per cent of EU’s gas demand, more than 1200 TWh per year. This makes Norway the third largest gas exporter in the world. It is important both for Norway and Europe that Norwegian clean energy export to EU can be maintained in the transition to a future zero emission energy system. To enable this, Gassco and SINTEF Energy Research have agreed to work towards a project in the Green Platform Programme with the main objective to enable safe and efficient gas export of hydrogen from Norway to Europe. This pre-project – HyExpectations – will build a foundation by connecting with stakeholders and research partners along the whole gas value chain, from production and transport to end-use, exploring also cross-sectorial couplings with the rest of the green energy system.
