MusicLab Copenhagen 2021

Awarded: NOK 99,999

Music Lab Copenhagen is a radical and ground-breaking event that combines classical music of the best calibre with extensive experiments on artists and audience. It communicates the importance for society of music and science to hundreds of audience members and hopefully, via TV, radio and streaming thousands of spectators around the globe. The event will be using a recent app development to ethically and legally use audience members’ personal smart phones for large data collection in a novel way. One of the world’s most famous string quartets, the Danish String Quartet (DSQ) has agreed to change one of their concerts (from their “series of four” concert series) into a series of scientific experiments. During the concert, the research team will do heart-rate measures, motion capture, pupillometry, interviews, and app-based self-rating with the quartet. The team will also do micromovement analysis of all audience members through motiongram analyses of video footage, heart rate measures on up to 20 audience members, and breathing as well as motion capture coupled with self-ratings and questionnaires of all audience members through a recently developed app. The app will couple people’s smart-phones accelerometer with their questionnaire ratings through the University of Oslo’s Nettskjema application. This is a novel way of ethically and legally using people’s personal phones for large data collection through smartphone hardware and recent app development. Down the line, based on such technologically mediated physiological measures, we will be able to correlate people’s phenomenology and physiology, understanding more precisely the potential of music for health and social cohesion.
