Latest figures from IEA show that the number of people without clean cooking facilities in sub-Saharan Africa remains acute, only 17% of the population have clean cooking access. The vast majority relies on collecting biomass for cooking, in particular in rural areas, which damages health and impairs productivity improvements. Forest degradation, is another serious consequence of the unsustainable harvesting of fuelwood. The Covid-19 pandemic made this situation even more critical (IEA Flagship report SDH7, Oct. 2020). Overall concept and objectives of the EU project - ONE2MANY will upscale and integrate state-of-the-art technologies in order to fully substitute wood fuels for solar energy as main mean for cooking and water disinfection. Targeting large charcoal and firewood consumers, ONE2MANY will focus on delivering a clean and reliable energy solution for schools and other community infrastructures while enabling them to generate income through peer-to-peer energy trade. Also, ONE2MANY aims to promote energy access based on the implementation of a novel expandable grid architecture. With it, the excess electrical energy from community infrastructures can be traded to residents and the grid integration of new actors is simplified. This scalable energy community will be achieved through an adapted go-to-market strategies and demonstrated within pilot sites along with straightforward pay-as-you-go schemes and affordable financing solutions.
