WasteNOmore: organic waste in Norway transformed into valuable resources

In Norway, about 355.000 tons food waste is generated annually (42.1 kg per capita, 2018). The production of this wasted foods equals about 600.000 tons CO2 eq. in Norway pointing to a high climate impact of its reduction. In addition to household food waste comes undocumented tonnage volumes of food loss from the primary sectors, food industry, distributions, retailers, grocery stores, hotels, and the food service sector. Norway has set ambitious targets to halve its food waste by 2030. Potential reuses for these organic resources include biogas and fertilizers. However, these have limited value for the Norwegian west coast. This pre-project aims to establish a consortium for upcycling food waste into feed by means of an integrated circular bioconversion and biorefinery concept to i) maintain the nutrient resources, ii) reduce environmental footprint, while iii) responding to the urgent needs for local aquaculture feed alternatives. In this main project, WasteNOmore will enable Norwegian businesses to test, scale and integrate bioprocess technologies, ensuring high conversions efficiencies and economically sound solutions while lowering footprints. The consortium to be established during the pre-project, will cover partnerships along all relevant stakeholder groups and value chains to build the biological, technical, economic, financial and legal expertise needed. Finally, the pre-project will lead to a report outlining the scope for the main proposal.
