Stipendiatstilling 2 NGI (2021-2023)

Awarded: NOK 4.2 mill.

Observations and decisions made by engineering geologists can be subjective due to varied experiences, knowledge, and human bias. The advancement in the application of Artificial Intelligence in geosciences can provide engineering geologists with helpful tools to carry out an unbiased characterisation of the rock mass and optimise the design to reduce time and cost. With the increasing popularity of using close-range sensing methods to acquire high-resolution 3D data from a rock mass for analysis and documentation, this PhD project is set to focus on finding ways to utilise and incorporate the close-range sensing technology and Artificial Intelligence in two disciplines in rock engineering: (1) objective rock mass mapping methods and (2) optimisation of rock support design.
