Stipendiatstilling 10 SINTEF (2021-2023)

Awarded: NOK 4.2 mill.

Open ocean waves are generally well reproduced experimentally in hydrodynamic laboratories. When ocean waves approach coastal regions, they are modified by for instance decreasing water depth, islands, skerries, coastline and fjords. Waves in a complex coastal zone have to a lesser extent been studied experimentally in large scale laboratory facilities. Research is needed to establish methods for determining local wave climates in coastal regions, as well as for high quality experimental modelling of coastal waves. The objective of the PhD study will be to establish methods for experimental and numerical modelling of coastal waves in hydrodynamic laboratories. A series of experiments has been carried out in SINTEF Ocean’s Ocean Basin at Tyholt, Trondheim. The inhomogeneities in the waves in the basin have been documented, which are relevant for generating inhomogeneous waves present in coastal areas. A numerical methodology for modeling wave inhomogeneities has been developed and implemented. The numerical tool is validated against model test data obtained from the experiments. A methodology for controlling inhomogeneities using a side wave maker was proposed, tested in the numerical tool, and validated using experiments. The results of the study have been compiled into an article and submitted to a journal for review.
