The objective of EPIC is to resolve a long-standing enigma concerning the nature of rapid and seemingly aberrant changes in global paleomagnetic data between 635 and 520 million years ago, which have prevented an understanding of the distribution of continents and oceans at a key time in Earth's evolution, when there were rapid developments in the cryosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.
