The global construction industry experience large costs due to material handling problems. More than 90% of all large construction projects overspend budgets; mainly due to logistic failures.
Our project concerns logistics issues with prefabricated concrete elements and include manufacture, storage, transportation and mounting. Today Logistic Systems are used with manual reading of labels attached outside concrete elements; both paper labels with text or bar-codes and RFID tags. This involves low reliability; also due to that attached labels often are lost.
Automated logistic systems are today enabled through powerful IT systems, and they give large benefits as real-time access to data, reduction of mistakes and improved customer service.
No-one have today implemented an automated system based on RFID ID Tags embedded and protected inside concrete elements to follow the elements seamlessly through the logistic process from production to mounting. It neither exists any system where unique production information of each building element is stored inside ensuring that unique production details for each element is available for investigations if any failures later happen.
The PreFabTag project aims at developing a passive UHF Tag for embedment into precast concrete elements. The Tag communicate through a reader with an automated logistic system to secure efficient supply of concrete elements to projects. The Tag contain an innovative designed antenna to enable sufficient signal strength to penetrate the concrete and be registered at a RFID reader placed more than 2 meters from the concrete surface when the Tag is embedded minimum 5 cm under the concrete surface. The project involves both developing the UHF Tag, the system to read the tags and an interface that feed signals into a logistic system to be used by all co-operating project partners. PreFabTags will also be loaded with production information and stay with the element for its full lifetime.
