With 80 GW total energy generation in 2018 and only 24% of households with access to electricity, Sub-Saharan Africa is in urgent need of sustainable and affordable energy to pursue its growth and development. The goal of the GOGREEN_Africa is to validate a versatile Green Micro-Grid (GMG) system providing sustainable and affordable on/off grid solutions for easy access to electricity and gas. The GMG will use an innovative methanation process as a bridge between solar panels and enhanced anaerobic digestion. This unique concept is controlled by a novel energy management system for maximum efficiency. A post-digestion system will complete the circular economy approach by upcycling waste streams to valuable products. To comply with the African context and market, the GMG system will be developed using robust and easy to use technologies with the aim to strengthen partnerships between European and African stakeholders. GOGREEN_Africa project will be divided into three phases: I) Implementation of the GMG on a test site in the Saint Louis region (Senegal) II) Technical, social, environmental, and economic validation of the GMG demonstrator III) Exploitation and replication plan: GOGREEN_Africa will foster replication towards other West African countries by developing an international value chain and standardised business model based on the GMG demonstrator results. The expected impacts of the project are: i) development of green economy and creation of sustainable employments, ii) positive climate action and sustainable environment, iii) improvement of the quality of life, sanitation and living conditions and iv) Efficient knowledge transfer and educational opportunities. The success of GOGREEN_Africa will lead to 20 commercial GMGs implemented in 5 West African countries by 2030, creating 140 direct jobs, local economy growth and an annual net saving of 13kt of CO2 compared to fossil fuel.
