The overall aim of the DigitalGut project is to combine the solutions of Unseen Biometrics (a digital metabolic gut model and analysis software engine) and Bio-Me (microbiome profiling platform) to create the fastest and most actionable gut biome analysis and recommendation engine for sufferers of IBS. Globally, it is estimated that 9.2% of the population suffer from IBS. Due to dietary and lifestyle factors, IBS is more prevalent in the western world with average of 15% of the population suffering from IBS. With the DigitalGut project, we will be able to to simulate the effect of different diet scenarios and how they affect the organisms in the gut and produce a report of specific recommendations for diet and lifestyle changes the consumer can make to alleviate the symptoms of IBS. The project consists of five key milestones: 1) Integration of PMP into Unseen Bio’s application; 2) Development of automated stool analysis methodology; 3) Implementation of metabolomics and AI; 4) Clinical evaluation of the kit. The project is well aligned to the EUROSTARS programme, which is designed to support research intensive SMEs with early stage high risk R&D-focused projects with a large potential market and a short route to market (< two years) which is a good characterisation of this project. Besides Bio-Me acting as project partner and work package leader, the project is coordinated by Unseen Biometrics ApS from Denmark, and is joined by Nordsjællands Hospital as project partner. Collectively, the collaboration between the three partners will enable the creation of the first second generation consumer-orientated microbiome genomics product that will provide IBS suffers and their healthcare providers with detailed information on their own gut microbiota. The consortium brings together all necessary expertise, covering the whole value chain to improve, validate and commercialise the outcome of DigitalGut on the international stage.
