Resource sharing in residential buildings: Innovative approaches to shared, circular mobility & space solutions for sustainable consumption

Alternative title: Ressursdeling i etablerte bomiljøer: Innovative tilnærminger til deling-, sirkulær mobilitet og arealløsninger for bærekraftig konsum

Awarded: NOK 10.4 mill.

RESHARE will combine 'sharing' in a new way. Consumption and resource use patterns will be linked by combining shared mobility and multifunctional shared space solutions in urban development and building projects. RESHARE will be guided by the theroretical framing of 'circular economy' and will focus on both reduction of resource use and circular use of resources. A shift to shared mobility and multifunctional space uses will support both these goals and lead to significant improvements in quality of life. RESHARE will further focus on the framework conditions [institutional and regulatory bottleneck, policies and strategies] that enable a transition towards interlocked shared solutions. Lack of knowledge on consumption patterns of combination of shared mobility and spaces often lead to built environments that discourage sharing. Further, there is no urban sharing strategy in Norway as such. We do not fully understand what characterizes efficient sharing strategies that enable sustainable consumption; and how to develop sharing strategies across macro-meso-micro scales. RESHARE will contribute to theoretical, methodological and empirical advancements by investigating sharing needs through experimentation and co-design of shared spaces in actual urban residential settings in Oslo, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods. This cross-disciplinary project will integrate hands-on actors' involvement with state-of-the-art research in planning, performed in a real-life setting, and designed to be replicated beyond the experimental site. In short., RESHARE outcomes will contribute to i) RESEARCH - LCA methods (on services), Circular Economy (framework conditions in urban planning), Planning Research, Urban Design and Architectural Studies (on sustainable consumption), and ii) PRACTRICE - Methods and tools for mapping and evaluating sharing needs, behaviours, framework conditions and the potential for creating circular built environments.

RESHARE addresses consumption and resource use patterns by linking shared mobility and multifunctional shared space solutions in urban development and building projects. It is rooted in the ethos that circular economy is as much about reduction of resource use as it is about shared and circular use of resources, a shift to shared mobility and multifunctional space uses will support both these goals and lead to significant improvements in quality of life. It will further focus on the framework conditions [institutional and regulatory bottleneck, policies and strategies] that enable a transition towards interlocked shared solutions. RESHARE has the potential to contribute to theoretical, methodological and empirical advancements by investigating sharing needs through experimentation and co-design of shared spaces in actual urban residential settings in Oslo, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods.
