Seterbruk på Nordvestlandet - Nytt perspektiv på gamle problemstillinger

Alternative title: Shielings of the Northwest – ancient objectives, recent perspectives

Awarded: NOK 1.8 mill.

The primary aim of this project is to enhance the understanding of prehistoric shielings and transhumance in Møre & Romsdal, and to promote sustainable archaeological methods and management of historically known shieling sites. The origin and development of the shieling system has been widely debated. Most of the prehistoric sites in Norway are located across the western parts of the country, yet there has been no systematic approach to interpret the regional and chronological variation based on archaeological and environmental data. It is thus unclear whether the existing spatial patterns are due to prehistoric variation or rather the result of previously applied strategies and current methods within cultural heritage management. One of the great challenges in managing these early shieling sites is the general lack of visible prehistoric structures. Early remains may have been be altered and concealed by later activity, and many sites are now mainly detectable through the existence of cultural deposits. Without evidence gained from large-scale excavations in these remote and vulnerable landscapes, it has been hard to understand how these sites were used and organized. The project will be divided in three secondary objectives to include a better understanding of: 1) the validity and representativeness of the archaeological record of shielings from the Iron and Middle Ages. 2) the changing social and physical structure of prehistoric shieling sites, by introducing and exploring the applicability and potential of geophysical and non-destructive methods. 3) the changing activities and use of prehistoric shieling sites and their physical environment, by exploring the applicability and potential of geoarchaeology and soil sample analysis. The project aims will be approached by compiling material from existing literature, databases and archives, through interviews, extensive surveys and geoarchaeological fieldwork, and by the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR).
