During the era of mass emigration from Norway to the USA an important mobilization of women’s rights activism and great advances in women’s rights took place in both countries. Women’s rights activists on both sides of the Atlantic were influenced and inspired by each other. These contexts have generally been ignored both in Norwegian-American historiography, in migration history, and in Norwegian women’s history. Researchers have focused on the women’s liberation and suffrage movement in history, both in Norway and in the USA. However, we still need to investigate the significance of transnational connections for the organisation and growth of women’s politics, both from a Norwegian and an American perspective. The novelty of the project is to display how transnationalism in the networks of women’s rights activists worked as agent of change and how this transcends the nation states and methodological nationalism. The latter has been the foundation for much research on the women’s rights movement and its impact on the development of democracy and human rights. I will author three articles. The first examines the Norwegian painter, writer, and women’s rights activist Aasta Hansteen’s stay in the USA from 1880 to 1889 and the resulting interactions and effects on further transnational contact between Norwegian, Norwegian-American and American women. The second article investigates Norwegian-American contacts and the collaboration within the International suffrage movement with a focus on the International Council of Women and in particular on the Woman Suffrage Alliance (WSA). The third article discusses how Norwegian-American women viewed the development of women’s politics in the USA during the time period. A transnational and intersectional perspective form the framework of the project as a whole. It will bring an essential contribution to Norwegian-American historiography connected to the bicentennial commemoration of Norwegian emigration to the USA in 2025.
